Uganda is damned if the elite do not join politics

Ask any South African or Rwandan elite about their country, they are
likely to give you a standard answer: I am proud to be a South
African, I am proud to be a Rwandese.

The uniting factor in both cases is the fact that virtually every
[black] South African was part of the struggle against apartheid. The
same applies to our brothers, the Rwandese.

Regardless of their active participation in the past governments in
Uganda, which largely passed unnoticed, the Rwandese became overt when
Museveni went to the 'bush'.

Many joined him; others gave financial assistance or any forms of
support they thought would advance the struggle. Some even held
positions in Obote's government but still found ways to support the
struggle.

The success of Museveni was, therefore, a collective success for the
community. Similarly, when some of them decided to form RPF and invade
Rwanda, they used the same methods [like those used during NRA bush
war].

Today, the distribution of power and wealth both in Uganda and Rwanda
clearly reflects the roles that various people played in both the NRA
and RPF struggles.

Many are unapologetic, and publicly proud of their roles in both wars.
Above all, they are proud to be what they are. Ugandan elites need to
emulate the two examples. To date, there is no doubt whatsoever as to
why Museveni and the bulk of the NRA went to the bush.

There is no doubt that, as part of their agenda, they have no plan to
share power and wealth or to surrender power and wealth to anybody
other than themselves.

There is no doubt that at this rate, Uganda is moving at a supersonic
speed towards collapse or a civil strife.

In the same breath, there is no doubt that there is a deficit of
leadership among the Ugandan politicians, namely because many, who are
serving Museveni, are opportunists. Very few among the crop of the
current politicians inspire. Very few have Uganda at heart, very few
understand the crisis Uganda is in.

At the moment, the majority fit in very well in the agenda of Museveni
because they are used like pawns in a chess game. They help to absolve
Museveni for he appears to be working with all Ugandans to 'develop'
Uganda.

No doubt, because of the nature of the politics deliberately
introduced by Museveni, many educated Ugandans have decided to shun
politics. Many have decided to concentrate on daily survival, educate
their children until God remembers Uganda and comes with a change.

What many have failed to realise is that so long as the hyena is still
around, it will devour anybody it comes across the moment it finishes
what it is eating now. Yet the reality is clear: no political party at
the moment has the leadership, the capacity, the finances, the nod of
the partisan security forces and the support of the people, to uproot
Museveni through any election. Neither can there be any meaningful
politics when Museveni is still in power.

In short, the country needs a new set of Ugandans to lead. All
patriotic, educated 'Ugandans' should join the non-partisan campaigns
to remove Museveni as soon as possible.

People may not necessarily join the street fights and demonstrations,
but they should offer their services i.e represent activists in court,
treat the injured, secretly give financial assistance, give secret
information, hide keys to courts, to jails, or any form of sabotage.

As Ugandans, we need to take on this regime or else our country is gone.

It is focused leadership, determination, and patriotism of the elites,
supported by the ordinary people, that can change Uganda. We either
liberate this country collectively and own it or we leave it continue
belonging to those who hunted 'the animal' for themselves.

The author is a Ugandan based in South Africa.
