Rwanda expels US Peace Corps volunteer

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) – The Rwandan authorities have expelled a US
Peace Corps volunteer for his involvement in violence against one of
his mates.

Mr Mathias Van Dis, who arrived in Rwanda several months ago, was
teaching English in a secondary school in Rutsiro, in western Rwanda,
official sources said on Monday in Kigali.

Sources close to the Rwandan security services said the Peace Corps
volunteer was "a threat to public safety", which justified his
expulsion.

He was accused of alleged "serious voluntary assault and battery"
during a fight in a bar during which he struck one of his friends with
an empty bottle.
